A young mother of several children, including a new baby, was in danger of having her water turned off due to inability to pay a past due amount. “Alyssa” called Catholic Charities crying because she had no way to pay her bill. We contacted the city and pledged to pay the amount necessary. When we called the client to assure her that we had taken care of her water bill, for which she expressed thanks and relief, we also shared information about our First Step program. She came in the next day and received diapers, formula, baby clothes and a few parenting tips. As importantly, she was comforted by the compassionate reception and listening ear provided by our staff person.
